Who asks for 600 DPI?
600 DPI is common in document and photo scanning workflows where every fine detail, from handwriting strokes to film grain, needs to be captured for archival purposes. Museums, libraries and fine-art print studios often specify it for reproductions meant to be examined up close or enlarged significantly. It is overkill for anything viewed on a screen, but it is the baseline many archiving standards call for.
What changing the DPI really does
At 600 DPI the metadata simply tells a printer to render the same pixels at a smaller physical size, packing more detail per inch; it still does not add or remove a single pixel from the source file. If the original scan or photo does not actually contain enough resolution, tagging it at 600 DPI will not manufacture detail that is not there.
