Why MozJPEG matters

Cameras and phones save JPEGs quickly, not efficiently. Re-encoding the same photo with MozJPEG typically cuts 50–80% of the file size at the same visible quality, because it spends much more effort optimizing how the image is stored.

Choosing the right quality

Quality 75 is the sweet spot for most photos: dramatic savings with differences you need a magnifier to find. Use 85–90 for photos you plan to print, and 60–70 when the smallest possible file matters more than pixel-perfect detail.

Frequently asked questions

Does compressing a JPEG again lose quality?

Re-encoding always involves some loss, but MozJPEG at quality 75+ keeps it below what the eye notices on screen. Avoid re-compressing the same file many times in a row.

Are EXIF data and GPS location kept?

The compressed copy is written clean, without the original metadata — which also removes the GPS location, a privacy bonus when sharing photos.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything runs locally in your browser with WebAssembly — your image never leaves your device, which makes this safe even for ID photos and documents.
