How to use this tool

  1. Pick your target file size, for example 100 KB, and drop your photos into the tool.
  2. The tool tests quality levels automatically until the image fits under your limit.
  3. Check the preview and download the image, or process a whole batch and get a ZIP.

How the 2 MB limit is reached

PhotoReducer tries different quality levels and keeps the best one whose file stays under 2 MB. Most photos reach this limit through compression alone, keeping their original dimensions.

Who asks for 2 MB files?

YouTube's official thumbnail limit is 2 MB, and most corporate email systems throttle or block attachments above that mark before the message even reaches the inbox. Real estate portals uploading dozens of listing photos per property also use this ceiling to keep galleries loading fast without sacrificing the detail buyers expect.

Real results when compressing to 2 MB

We measured these results using the exact same compression engine that runs on this site, applied to five public-domain sample images. Each image was compressed to the target size with our quality-search algorithm, and dimensions were reduced only when quality alone was not enough. Your own photo may give different results depending on its content and starting size.

Each sample was compressed with MozJPEG, the same engine used on this site. We searched for the highest quality level that fits the target size, and reduced dimensions only when quality alone could not reach it. Your photo will give different results depending on its content, colors and original size.

Frequently asked questions

Will the image still look good at 2 MB?

At this size the difference from the original is usually invisible on screen — most photos keep their full dimensions.

Does it change the format of my file?

The output is JPG by default — the format virtually every form accepts — and you can switch to WebP. JPG, PNG, WebP and AVIF are accepted as input.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything runs locally in your browser with WebAssembly — your image never leaves your device, which makes this safe even for ID photos and documents.

What happens if the target size cannot be reached?

The tool keeps the highest quality it can achieve without going below the minimum quality floor. If the limit is still not met, try converting to WebP first, or reduce the image dimensions before compressing. With very small images or very low size limits, it may simply not be possible.

Are the metadata and GPS location removed?

Yes. Every image is re-encoded from scratch, so the result contains no EXIF data at all. That includes the GPS location, camera model, and any other metadata that came with the original file. What you download is a clean image.

Can I process many photos at once?

Yes, you can drop in a whole batch of photos and process them all at once. When you are done, download everything as a single ZIP file. Everything runs locally in your browser, so none of your photos are ever uploaded to a server.
